SmoothWall Corporate Server

SmoothWall Corporate Server is a modular firewall system. The standard product will satisfy the firewall needs of most small to medium sized companies. However, with its add-on modules, Corporate Server provides facilities normally expected only of products costing many thousands of dollars. Simpler to install and manage than any comparable products, yet it has an unsurpassed security record.

Corporate Server turns a Pentium™ class PC into a dedicated hardware firewall providing "True Security". Based on its own operating system, a heavily cut-down version of Linux, it does not suffer from the underlying security weaknesses of general-purpose operating systems. To quote from the June 2001 issue of PC Plus, "A software firewall is far from a perfect solution. Thanks to the loopholes and limitations present in all versions of Windows, you'll never be 100 per cent secure from someone who wants to penetrate your system, unless your connection runs through a hardware firewall device."

SmoothWall Corporate Server provides a secure Internet Gateway for user PCs running Microsoft Windows® 95/98/ME, Windows NT/2000/XP, MacOS, Linux or Unix; all are easily configured to connect to the Internet via SmoothWall. Corporate Server supports a wide range of Internet connections including ADSL, analogue and cable modems, ISDN and Ethernet. Ideal for businesses moving to ‘always on’ ADSL connections who are concerned about the seriously increased risk of attack from the world-wide legions of hackers and script-kiddies.

Key Features

  • Easy to install and configure due to its intuitive GUI browser interface, typically up and running in under 10 minutes (dependent on hardware).
  • Low specification PC required, virtually any redundant Pentium class PC will suffice.
  • Flexible modular design, buy the facilities you need, not ones you don’t require.
  • Supports a wide range of Internet connections, including direct Ethernet to routers, cable modems, USB ADSL, ISDN and analogue modems.
  • Comprehensive information provided on the firewall status, traffic graphs, diagnostics etc. with the logging of all activity.
  • Intrusion Detection System (IDS) to report and analyse all suspicious traffic, network probes and attempts to breech the firewall etc.
  • Comprehensive VPN support (see separate information on SmoothWall VPN and the SmoothTunnel and SmoothConnection modules).
  • De-Militarized Zone (DMZ) for the isolation of Internet facing web and mail servers from the private local network containing private file servers, workstations etc.
  • Support for multiple public IP addresses on the Internet interface to permit the hosting of large numbers of web and mail servers etc. (see separate information on the SmoothHost module)
  • SmoothGuard Content Protection System permits the blocking of offensive Internet sites, which allows you to maintain your own list of Domains, URLs and IP Addresses to be blocked.
  • By default blocks all inbound traffic that is not the result of a request from the local protected network.
  • Includes a DHCP Server that supports static IP address assignment.

Support and Maintenance

Like anti-virus software, it is essential that security systems are kept up-to-date to counter the rapidly changing threats presented by the Internet. New ways of mounting attacks are constantly being devised and published via Internet sites, chat-rooms etc. Looking at: www.attrition.org/mirror/attrition reveals a large number of web sites that have suffered from defacement. Perhaps the more serious risk is that of the intruder who steals confidential information without you even noticing; well not until your secrets become public knowledge or your business starts to suffer!

SmoothWall Limited responds quickly to all new relevant vulnerabilities and threats. If a software update is required then this will be produced and made available for download, usually within a matter of hours. Maintenance options are available where customers can for a fixed fee subscribe to all new software versions for a twelve months period. Product support is available from SmoothWall Limited and its reseller network.

System Requirements

  • IBM compatible PC: Pentium compatible processors: Pentium I, II, III, 4; AMD; Cyrix; IBM
  • 32Mb RAM minimum, preferably 64Mb for optimal performance (especially if the proxy server/cache and Intrusion Detection System are enabled)
  • IDE or SCSI hard disk drive, minimum 540Mb capacity, more for systems with large numbers of users
  • IDE (ATAPI) or SCSI CD-ROM drive is recommended for ease of installation (can be removed after software installation)
  • Monitor and Keyboard (can be removed after software installation)
  • LAN Card, either ISA (not recommended) or PCI (Realtek and 3-Com cards recommended for ease of auto-detection and performance)
  • Internet Connection via an USB ADSL Modem, External Analogue Modem, Cable Modem, ISDN (Card or Terminal Adapter) or Ethernet Router (including ADSL and satellite). Winmodems and most PCI Plug and Play devices are not supported.

IMPORTANT NOTICE
Corporate Server provides 'True Security' by creating a dedicated hardware firewall. Therefore Corporate Server does not install on your existing server or desktop PC. You will need a separate PC, the hard disk of which will be reformatted by SmoothWall.
