ProNet Computers uses the latest technology in cabling to ensure the best outcome for our clients. Cat 5 cable is normally for use in structured cabling installations. Structured cabling is a large step up  in terms of reliability and bandwidth over earlier shared media networks previously used before.

Previous shared media networks were usually very unreliable. That was because a fault on the cable itself, could stop the entire network working. Also, the network traffic was going through a single wire that meant that bandwidth was severally limited. Potentially security could be an issue. That was  because all of the traffic was being carried in a single wire. That meant that any of the network stations could in theory enter the network, and see all of the information traffic from  any of the nodes.

These types of cabling systems can help to make the cabling system more flexible and enable it to be used in different areas. This type of cabling can be used for audio visual, also telephony have decided to use structured cabling to communicate. Before the advent of Cat5 each industry had its own cabling standards. This meant many different sorts of cables were installed instead of one common cable. This increased costs to industry and was very inefficient, now Cat 5 carries broadband  and telephony. It is used both in business and in the home for work and entertainment.

Definition: Category 5 refers to a shielded or unshielded twisted pair cable type that prevents interference. It has balanced lines of four twisted pairs in a single cable jacket, which aid the preservation of a high signal-to-noise ratio. Its specification is ANSI/TIA/EIA-568-A, with clarification in TSB-95. These characteristics are required for a frequency of up to 100 MHz. Within the cable there are 3 twists per inch of each twisted pair of 24 gauge copper wires.
