Structured cabling is a large step up in terms of reliability and bandwidth over earlier shared media networks previously used before.

Also, the network traffic was going through a single wire that meant that bandwidth was severally limited. Potentially security could be an issue. That was because all of the traffic was being carried in a single wire. That meant that any of the network stations could in theory enter the network, and see all of the information traffic from any of the nodes.

This type of cabling can be used for audio visual, also telephony have decided to use structured cabling to communicate. Before the advent of Cat5 each industry had its own cabling standards.
